Fast Facts:

  • The white Norwegian goose is a hardy bird, bold and self-sufficient.

  • Females can lay up to 100 eggs per year if not allowed to sit. The eggs will take approximately 30 days to hatch.

Norwegian Goose

Classification Phylum Chordata, Sub-phylum Vertebrata, Class Aves, Order Anseriformes, Family Anatidae
Status Domestic populations are considered stable, but this breed of goose is now quite rare in its homeland.
Size Ganders, or male geese, may weigh up to 22 pounds, while adult females usually weight around 18 pounds.

Special Features

  • Domestic geese are generally not capable of flight, although they can jump to glide short distances.
  • The Romans and other Europeans raised geese in ancient times. Geese were sacred in Egypt 4,000 years ago.
