Special Features:

  • The short, smooth coat ranges in color from brown-gray to reddish brown to blue-gray. They have 4-12 white stripes along its back and a white mark between the eyes.
  • A bushy fringe runs from the chin to the chest.
  • Although timid animals that readily bolt for cover, they will stop to look back giving their predators a good opportunity to capture them.
  • Active throughout the 24-hour day.
  • They may water in the dry season but are capable of surviving in a waterless region.


Social Structure & Behavior:

The spiral horns are so well developed for wrestling that they can sometimes become so severely interlocked that the two animals fighting cannot release each other, and thus both die. Live in small herds. Males live in bachelor herds. Have a wide repertoire of vocalizations.

Breeding &Care of Young:
Gestation is 7-9 months. Usually 1 birth, rarely 2. Births coincide with the rainy season. Sexual maturity is 18 months. Weaned at 6 months.
