Special Features:
- Prefer open country and avoid dense cover.
- The forward facing eyes are for binocular vision.
Social Structure & Behavior:
They live in harem groups with one male and up to 15 females. Only the females are permanent residents. When territorially threatened the males will give loud warning calls while the females will more actively defend their territory.
The males acts as a watchdog for the group standing on his back legs looking over the grasses using his tail as a tripod for balance. If he sees an enemy he will offer a soft chirp warning. The females will hide in the grass while the male uses diversionary tactics.
Although they can climb trees, they depend on their speed to escape. Diurnal.
Breeding & Care of Young:
Sexual maturity is 4-4.5 years old in males and 3 years old in females.
Gestation is 170 days resulting a single birth. Males wait for females to approach them for breeding.
