Special Features
- There is a wide variation in coat color depending on the location of the Possum. Coloration can range from light gray to tan to red to black. The underside is always a lighter color.
- Pure golden possums are the result of a genetic mutation and most do not survive long in the wild because they are conspicuous to predators.
- Scent glands located on the chest, under the chin and around the anus are used to mark territory.
- They will swim if necessary to escape predators.
- As a marsupial, the female has a forward-facing pouch to raise her young.
Social Structure & Behavior
Arboreal and nocturnal. During the day it rests in hollowed out logs and trees. In urban areas they can be found in people's attics.
Although they are solitary animals, their territories often overlap.
Reproduction
Sexual maturity at 12 months for females and 18-24 months for males. Gestation 17 days. Lactation in the pouch lasts 6-9 months. The last few months the babies will ride on the mother's back.
