Conservation
Hunted almost to extinction in the early 20th century until 1923 when they were put under protection. Today they are still being hunted for their horns. However, a shortage of males in the wild has put their population under stress.
Special Features
- Live in herds of 30-40 animals.
- Only the males have horns.
- The herd is constantly moving averaging 4 mph and covering 60 miles each day. When migrating, the herds will join other groups and cover up to 125 miles each day.
- Can gallop 35 mph
- When fleeing, a saiga will go around an obstacle rather than jump over it.
- As long as it finds moist plants to eat, the saiga doesn't need to drink water.
