  • Hingebacks are a species of tortoise that have hinges on the bottom part of their shells. The hinges can close up to protect the animal's rear end.

  • Tortoises are reptiles that live on land and use water only for bathing and drinking.

Range Found throughout central and east Africa.
Habitat Hingeback tortoises live in many different habitats, including savannas, costal bush and grasslands.
Diet Hingebacks are omnivores, which means they will eat plants and animals. In the wild their diet will include snails, slugs and millipedes, as well as grasses, plants and fruits that have fallen from the plant.
Size Compared to most other tortoise species, hingeback tortoises have a small overall size. The largest type of hingeback, the serrated hingeback (Kinixys erosa) can grow to be nearly 12 inches long.
