Fast Facts:

  • These zebra have black stripes that are close together on a white body. These stripes do not extend across the belly.

  • Has a square fold of skin under its neck that is called a dewlap that is most prominent on males.

  • Pattern of stripes is as individual as human fingerprints.

Special Features:

  • Neighs like a horse
  • Graze 60-80% of the day.
  • Can survive up to 3 days without water. Has been known to dig down as far as 3 feet searching for water.
  • Agile climber.
  • Keen sense of hearing and eyesight.


Social Structure & Behavior:

Lives in small herds consisting of 1 stallion and up to 5 mares. Nomadic group lead by a mare with the stallion walking behind to defend the herd.

Breeding & Care of Young:
Sexually mature at 2 years old. Mating season is Spring. Gestation is 12 months. Usually a single birth. The foal is up on its feet within an hour. Young males leave the herd to form bachelor herds at 2 years old
