Internship Opportunities

Position Title:  Landscape Intern      

Reports to:   Landscape Supervisor

Salary: This is an un-paid position

Summary:  Experience what it takes to maintain a botanical collection across 65 acres of beautifully landscaped Zoo grounds.

What would I do as an intern?
Horticulture Internships are physically demanding and interns may be subject to a variety of environmental factors. Depending on the nature of the assignment, routine tasks involve frequent bending, stretching, climbing, and lifting. Interns will be required to work outdoors and must, therefore, be able to tolerate extreme weather conditions, including heat and cold, rain, snow, and humidity. Interns are also subjected to strong odors, dust, hay, and animal hair/fur/dander. Please take these things into consideration when applying.

  • Maintain lawns and grassy areas – mowing, watering, fertilizing, aerating, seeding, or reseeding.
  • Water plant material using irrigation systems or by setting up hoses with sprinklers.
  • Maintain various water fountains throughout the Zoo.
  • Inspect assigned areas for evidence of disease, insects, and weeds, and take the appropriate corrective action.
  • Work with keeper staff to coordinate landscape care for animal exhibits.
  • Research plants for toxicity and appropriateness to each individual animal exhibit.
  • Monitor hardscapes – railroad tie walls, planter boxes, trees wells, etc.
  • Operation, adjustment, care, and cleaning of hand tools, power tools, and other equipment.
